Historical town
The basic street pattern within the historic center of Phimai follows the ancient Khmer design
and streets are still mostly lined with traditional one-storey wooden houses with upstairs terraces
and all kinds of shops on floor level.
The town population and out-of-town visitors, frequent the lively “night market”
which takes place every afternoon and evening in the center of town.
People shop, meet with friends and acquaintances and choose from an endless selection
of local culinary adventures and delights – to eat right away or take home.
The remnants of town walls, three of the four original gates situated at all points of the compass,
and the river bed of the Chakkarat, which was widened for long-boat races, as well as
the Phimai National Museum are further points of interest for visitors from everywhere.
